2016 gmc terrain: old, but still bold

GMC’s Terrain was launched in 2010 as their entry into the small to midsize crossover segment. Now in its seventh year of production, it has gone through some slight updates for 2016.

Most notable are the front and rear fascia, which now have more chrome, LED daytime running lights and a “power dome” on the hood. The Terrain is a standout among other crossovers thanks to its bold fenders and HUMMER-esque styling.

Performance

Capable of 301 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque, the 3.6-litre V6 engine at the heart of the Terrain Denali, has plenty of power when you need it and is able to tow up to 3,500 lbs. On the highway the 6-speed automatic gearbox delivers sharp acceleration when needed. GMC says the Terrain Denali will do 14.7 (city) and 10.2 (hwy) L/100km; I even managed a respectable 9.8 L/100km during my short time with the crossover.

All-wheel drive comes standard on the Denali trim level as well as StabiliTrak traction control technology which helps the driver by intelligently managing braking and throttle to help keep the vehicle on the right path.

Interior Design

Although GMC is known as a truck brand, the interior of the Terrain Denali is far from rugged. The cabin features a leather stitched dash as well as a leather wrapped steering wheel with dark woodgrain accents. The Denali trim level gets unique Denali illuminated front sill plates along with seats and steering wheel that are embossed with the Denali logo.

For 2016, GMC has placed specific attention on sound-deadening for the Terrain. An acoustic-laminated windshield and triple door seals help in making the Terrain extremely quiet on the road.

While carrying passengers, there is 31.6 cubic feet of rear cargo space with a maximum of 63.7 cubic feet possible with the seats folded down.

Technology

The centre stack houses the standard 7-inch colour touchscreen display. On the Denali, the IntelliLink display features a reconfigurable home screen, voice activated controls, USB and Bluetooth audio streaming.

OnStar 4G LTE is equipped on all models and transforms the Terrain into a Wi-Fi hotspot on the road capable of connecting up to 7 devices.

Safety features are abundant on the Terrain Denali including forward collision alert, side blind zone and rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning and rear park assist.

Pros
Powerful V6 engine
Comfortable interior
Quiet highway ride

Cons

Exterior looks that haven’t changed in six years
