FBI agents and police from New South Wales arrested Paul “Doug” Peters, an Australian citizen at his ex-wife’s house in the small, quiet town of La Grange, north-east of Louisville. Mr Peters, a father of three, “commuted” between Sydney and the US, where he had lived and worked for part of his life and now faces charges in Australia including kidnapping, breaking and entering and extortion.

On Wednesday, August 3 at about 2:30pm local time, police were phoned by Madeleine Pulver, the daughter of William and Belinda Pulver, reportedly one of Sydney’s wealthiest families. When they arrived at the family home, they found the young woman inside alone, attached to a “collar bomb”. For ten hours, bomb deposal experts worked to defuse the bomb and release the woman while police evacuated nearby properties and closed off the area roads. Shortly before midnight, the girl was set free and reunited with her parents.

A subsequent analysis of the device proved that the bomb was fake however fingerprints on the various components were discovered. The police have not yet released the details of their investigation but had disclosed that they were seeking an alleged suspect only days after the incident.

The Telegraph has reported that David Hudson, the NSW assistant police commissioner, has said that there were links between Mr. Peters and the Pulver family even though Mr Peters was not known to the family. Apparently Mr. Peters had come to the attention of police several days after the attack on Miss Pulver and that police were not looking for any other offenders in relation to the attack and attempted extortion. He had been linked to the crime by a detailed string of circumstantial evidence including the fact that he left Australia on Aug 8, just five days after the attack.

Mr Peters’ initial court appearance was set for Tuesday morning in Louisville and the extradition process could take about two months.

Various news outlets quoted the Australia Prime Minister as saying that the crime, which gripped the country as it unfolded live on television, resembled “a Hollywood script.”
