In a statement issued by the University of Waterloo’s President, Feridun Hamdullahpur, it was announced that the highly acclaimed retired Canadian astronaut, Chris Hadfield, has signed on as a professor of aviation. Although his appointment as an adjunct professor officially begins from now onwards, Hadfield is not expected to start teaching until the fall of 2014, due to his busy schedule. Prof. Hadfield is anticipated to continue his contribution in an ongoing research into heart health in space that is ongoing at the University of Waterloo.

In his official statement, Hamdullahpur stated that “this is a tremendous opportunity for our students and researchers to work with, and learn from, one of the greatest Canadians of recent times.” He elucidated that Prof. Hadfield is one of the most popular astronauts who mostly grabbed interest of many Canadian, along with global audience, during his recent five-month visit to the International Space Station, where he became the first Canadian to command the laboratory.

The director of the university’s aviation program, Ian McKenzie, initially began offering the position to Prof. Hadfield since he was nearing his retirement from the Canadian Space Agency this past summer. It was quoted that Hadfield’s ability to bond with diverse audiences from the space station was a proof to the university that he would make a good teacher, while since aviation is a young program it could benefit well from his profile. Prof. McKenzie boasted that “Chris has been involved with the university for many years,” and so we’ve discovered that “he’s quite engaging.”
