Canada Basketball announced today the 2010 Cadette Women’s National Team (CWNT) tryout/training camp roster, camp schedule and international competitions for the summer season. The CWNT invitees have a busy week ahead starting with an intense camp to vie for a spot on the inaugural world championship squad.

CWNT tryouts will run from July 1-2, followed by training camp from July 3-6 at University of Toronto, Mississauga Campus in Mississauga, Ont. Twenty eight of the top age-eligible female athletes will come from across Canada to compete for spots on the 2010 CWNT or the 3-on-3 team competing in the first-ever Youth Olympic Games.

The 12 athletes selected to the CWNT begin their season in Spain with an exhibition tournament against the United States, Spain and Australia. This group will then travel to Toulouse/Rodez, France July 16-25 to compete at the inaugural FIBA U17 World Championship for Women.

The training camp also determines the four athletes that will make up Canada’s first ever 3-on-3 squad participating in the FIBA 33 Competition at the Youth Olympic Games running from August 14-25 in Singapore.

Of the 2010 invitees, 12 players are returning from the 2009 CWNT that won silver at the 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship including leading scorers Nirra Fields (Lachine, QC.) and Shalie Dheenshaw (Victoria, B.C.).

FIBA U17 World Championship for Women

The first-ever FIBA U17 World Championship for Women features the best athletes aged 17 years and younger from 12 nations around the world. Team Canada is assigned to Pool A and will open the preliminary round on July 16 against Turkey.

The top four teams from the preliminary rounds in Groups A and B will advance to the quarter-finals and play for the top eight spots in the standings. Teams placing fifth and sixth in each preliminary round group will play for the bottom four spots in the standings. Games in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals are scheduled to be held on July 23, 24 and 25 in Toulouse/Rodez, France.

Youth Olympic Games

The inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) brings together athletes aged 14 to 18 from all 205 National Olympic Committees to compete in the 26 sports on the London 2012 Olympic Games program.

Canada’s girls have been placed in Group A along with Korea, Vanuatu, Ivory Coast and Russia for this summer’s YOG 3-on-3 basketball tournaments.

“We are honoured to have been selected by FIBA to participate in the inaugural FIBA-33 competition and Youth Olympic Games in Singapore,” said Denise Dignard, Manager of Women’s Elite Performance for Canada Basketball. “Our women’s national team program is excited about the introduction of the 3-on-3 competition at the international level in the youth category as it has the potential to make an important impact on the overall development of young athletes and inspire them to represent their country at future FIBA World Championships and Olympic Games.”
