Apple’s tablet iPad’s share of the global market has come down heavily due to increasing competition from Android slates that despite recording a 20% increase in shipped units during the past three months.

Earlier in the week Apple announced that iPad shipments for the most recent calendar quarter increased to 11.12 million units, which stood at 9.2 million in the previous quarter.

That news has since then been counteracted by a report on Friday by Strategy Analytics that tells that the iPad’s share which was hovering at 96% globally has now dipped to 67% and on the other hand Android based tabs have increased their market share to 27%

IDC analyst Tom Mainelli said “It is clear that the iPad is experiencing slowing growth”

According to Tom Mainelli “Many of the affluent consumers most likely to spend $500 or more on an iPad in markets such as the United States have already done so, and these buyers have now moved into a replacement buying cycle,”

He further said that for Apple to maintain its previous shipment levels they need to appeal to mainstream consumers.

Neil Mawston Strategy Analytics Director said “Amazon’s strategy of minimizing its hardware price is set to ignite the entry-level tablet segment and attract more mass-market consumers,”
