here’s why shah rukh khan starred in darr and baazigar

Shah Rukh Khan is known the eternal romance hero. But, the actor never thought that he could ever become a movie star. Except for his mother who thought he looked and acted like Dilip Kumar, no one believed an ordinary man to become one of the biggest superstars of the country.

Many may remember that SRK made his Bollywood debut in 1992 with Rishi Kapoor and Divya Bharti starrer Deewana. The film gave SRK a great boost but he chose to do different roles after his debut. He chose to play anti-hero in three of his back-to-back films, 1993’s Baazigar and Darr and 1994’s Anjaam. As the reports had suggested, many big time actors in 90s had refused to do roles as it could have damaged their hero image. So, when SRK agreed to do the roles, the former movies had turned out to be huge at the box office.

In a candid interview, Shah Rukh Khan opened about the choices he had made with his earlier films and dealing with stardom. According to SRK, he had agreed to do such villainous roles because he did not think was good-looking enough to be a hero. So, he thought at least get a villain job. He said that he didn’t do those roles because he was gutsy or knew that he could have pulled off those roles because he was a great actor. He did those roles because he just wanted to act.

SRK recalled the time when one of the directors, whom SRK refused to name, had told him that SRK was so ordinary and ugly looking guy that he could be used for anything. He revealed that he took all those anti-hero roles because he just wanted to act in films. It didn’t matter to him whether he was going to become Rishi Kapoor or Amitabh Bachchan, it didn’t matter if he was going to be Salman Khan or Aamir Khan. All he wanted was to act because he knew he knew a little bit of it.

Years later, Shah Rukh Khan returned as an anti-hero in Fan in 2016. Now, SRK’s kickstarting 2017 is Raees in which he plays a bootlegger and criminal figure in 1980s Gujarat. The role has shades of grey and once again will remind the audience of those anti-hero days. Raees stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Mahira Khan and will open in theatres on January 25.
