After having done films like Parineeta, No One Killed Jessica, Paa and Lage Raho Munna Bhai, when Vidya Balan decided to play the lead in the 2011’s most talked about film The Dirty Picture; it raised way too many eyebrows. When asked about it then, Vidya Balan said that she had taken a few months before saying yes to the role, which was ‘bold’ in the real sense of the word.

On the occasion of ‘Father’s Day’ yesterday, Vidya Balan shared a video on the social media, wherein she revealed that, it was her 71 year old father P. R. Balan, who had encouraged her to take up the role in The Dirty Picture. The video met with a tremendous response on the social media.

Speaking about the role, she said, “When I was considering doing The Dirty Picture, I sat my parents down and I told them (that) there would be a lot of skin show. I knew what I was doing, and I enjoyed doing it, but I needed to know how they were going to react. I did a family preview of the film”. On his part, P. R. Balan said “Before the start (of the film), she just announced…it’s a bold movie, so..That’s all. But we didn’t find anything awkward watching this movie at all. And everybody endorsed-‘Yes, she has got into the character so well’. By God’s grace, it went on really to be a hit, and she won the National award for that. I, as a father, felt extremely happy and proud.” Vidya Balan continued stating, “He clapped in front of everyone. When they said that to me. I felt like -OK, now it doesn’t matter what the world says. That vote of confidence…was priceless.” In the same breath, Vidya Balan said, “I wish every girl in the world had a father like you Appa. Priya (her sister) and I are really blessed and fortunate to have a father who’s just let us be ourselves. We are because you are.”
