First half of 20171

First half of 2017 is through and except for dubbed release Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion, there hasn’t been a major grosser. Yes, there have been successes like Raees, Jolly LLB 2, Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Kaabil. However, the non-performance of biggies like Tubelight, Raabta and Rangoon has diluted the impact. Nonetheless, there are good hopes for the industry before 2017 comes to a close as there is a flurry of biggies awaiting to hit the screens in the coming few months and that should keep the flag high for Bollywood. Also, most of these films are expected to enter the 100 Crore Club and some could even go past the 200 crore mark.

Munna Michael
Next big film to arrive is Munna Michael. The film’s promo suggests that this one is a quintessential ‘masala’ film in the offering that should work across the A, B and C centers. Director Sabbir Khan has a flair for commercially entertaining cinema, as was the case with Baaghi and Heropanti. With Tiger Shroff he is expected to create the same magic and score a hat-trick. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is added advantage to the film.

Mubarakan
Yet another film that has a director at the helm of affairs who has a commercial bent of mind, Mubarakan is set to be an Anees Bazmee film all the way. Arjun Kapoor recently had a decent grosser in the form of Half Girlfriend and now with Mubarakan he is stepping into an out and out massy zone. With Anil Kapoor’s presence further accentuating the overall star value, Mubarakan is being seen as a fun family entertainer.

Toilet – Ek Prem Katha
Akshay Kumar has been picking up a new and interesting subject with every passing film of his and Toilet – Ek Prem Katha is no different. The promo has been unanimously appreciated and the subject is such that the interiors would be totally able to relate to it. A rare commercial film that taps social/hygiene issues in a fun manner and brings in the message along with entertainment on screen, this one should be a winner.

Jab Harry Met Sejal
Shah Rukh Khan is returning to a romcom after ages and with Imtiaz Ali at the helm of affairs, Jab Harry Met Sejal is set to be a fusion affair with the coming together of two distinct thought processes. Together, Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma have delivered a couple of successes together [Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Jab Tak Hai Jaan] and this one is set as a much livelier and fun affair that should keep the youth happy.

First half of 20172

Baadshaho
Director Milan Luthria and Ajay Devgn have been a team that has always worked when it comes to rustic Bollywood-ish flicks, case in point being Kachche Dhaage and Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. Now if the promo of Baadshaho is any indication, the film is as commercial as it gets and speaks the kind of language that works with the masses. Emraan Hashmi adds to the mix and Vidyut Jammwal brings on the action.

Judwaa 2
Double the Varun Dhawan, double the ‘dhamaal’ – that should well turn out to be the fun quotient that makes Judwaa 2 one of the most awaited films of the year. Together, producer Sajid Nadiadwala and director David Dhawan had delivered a solid Hit with Salman Khan 20 years back with Judwaa. Now that Varun is coming in place for Salman for the same combination, expectations are huge by a fair distance.

Golmaal Again
Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgn have been a very successful ‘jodi’ for almost a decade and a half, and their Golmaal franchise has been the biggest of the lot. Now that they are coming in the fourth installment of the franchise, expectations have soared like never before. There is a good reason for that since Bollywood has been hunting for a major comic entertainer for a while and this Diwali release should take care of it.

Padmavati
Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor coming together for Padmavati is surely one of the biggest star studded affairs to arrive at the big screen before the close of the year. The film’s shooting is on at a rapid pace and one waits to see the grandeur and scale that would aid the ‘big screen’ storytelling of a historic chapter from the history of India. A much awaited affair.

Tiger Zinda Hai
Salman Khan may have had a disappointment with Tubelight. However, by all means that should be an aberration since he returns with Ek Tha Tiger co-star Katrina Kaif for the film’s sequel, Tiger Zinda Hai. The action musical entertainer sees a big Christmas release for itself that should set the stage for it. Moreover, the director at the helm of affairs is Ali Abbas Zafar [Sultan] that should keep the YRF flag high.
