Sanjay Dutt shares five important life lessons and it’s a must read

Veteran actor Sanjay Dutt has lived a roller coaster life. On one hand, he saw professional success and was blessed with a great family. But on the other hand, he had a tough time battling his drug addiction. On top of that, he got involved in crime when he accepted delivery of weapons in his house. It led to his imprisonment twice, from April 1993 to October 1995 and from May 2013 to February 2016.

Sanjay Dutt at various junctures has spoken about these experiences and what it has taught him. Recently Entrepreneur magazine published his life lessons and we bring you the same in this Bollywood Hungama special feature

1. Know the law of the land:
Sanjay Dutt said, “You should know the law of the land, whether it is the corporate or criminal law.” He admitted that it was his mistake that he did not know the law. He expected the police to let him go since he was a first-time offender. But he was imprisoned under TADA (Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act) and the actor said that he had no idea what it was. “I had to read (in detail about) TADA and also IPC (Indian Penal Code) and MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act). There were times when I had briefed my lawyer,” added Sanjay.

2. Face the problem:
Sanjay Dutt said that one should not run away from the problem. Instead, one should look at the problem in the eye and thereby emerge stronger. “Tell yourself that you will come back,” is what he suggested.

3. It’s over:
Sanjay Dutt feels that one should put the past behind. Every time, he started his life with a clean slate by wiping off the past.

4. Own your mistakes:
Sanjay Dutt is one of the rare actors who have won everyone through his honesty. He said matter-of-factly, “I am a human being and I made mistakes and I should be honest about it.” When he was booked for TADA, Sanjay Dutt was shooting in Mauritius. His sister informed him about it and he immediately flew down to Mumbai. He emphasized that he chose to come back despite having a faint idea that he can land in trouble by doing so. Yet, he returned and told the relevant authorities that he has done few mistakes and requested them to give appropriate punishment for it.

5. Stop hoping:
Sanjay Dutt clarified that one should never hope when in jail. He opined, “When I went to jail, it took me two weeks to stop hoping but the day I stopped hoping, my days in the jail passed so fast. Hope is not bad but you should be able to control hope.”
