A youngster with dreams in his eyes – This could well be the real as well as reel life tale of Puneet Singh Ratn who is making his debut with Ram Gopal Varma's Satya 2. While it was Chakravarthy who made a terrific impression with Satya 15 years back, it is expected that Puneet would manage to create his place under the sun as well.
Just like millions out there, you too must be a huge fan of Satya, right?
Absolutely. It's a cult classic of this country and one of the finest films ever made. I have grown up watching that kind of cinema. The film is one of my favourites. I was in school at that time when Satya was released. I remember dancing on songs like 'Sapne Mein Milti Hai' and 'Kallu Mama'. Before Satya, we hadn't seen anything like that which was so real with real characters. In 1998, this was the most realistic film anyone had ever seen. That was one major thing that hit me. It was etched in the memory.
Was it tough to get into the psyche of a character like Satya?
I have not seen a character like this in my life. It is so powerful, intense and hard hitting. This man has his own style which is not quintessentially Bollywood. See, when I read a character or when someone is narrating a script to me, it is all about how the director is establishing the character. I really liked the way Ram Gopal Varma explained today's Satya to me.
While Satya was the story of an underdog, Satya 2 is about a man who is on a mission, right?
First and foremost let's not compare since the film is neither a sequel nor a prequel. Satya was about a guy who stepped into the city of Mumbai as a simpleton and how circumstances forced him into the underworld. In Satya 2 though, this guy gets into the city with an idea, motto and goal. The film is about how he is going to achieve that goal; that is the core storyline.
Ramu tells me though that he finds you quite strong in the method acting department. Is that truly the case?
As an actor if I have been brought on board then I need to get something on the table. Every actor has a different approach to the craft and I have my own. I know what works best for me when I face the camera. It may be termed anything, whether being spontaneous or method. I do my set of things to get into the skin of the character.
However, since Ramu hasn't delivered a true-blue hit for some time, were you worried about that since Satya 2 is your debut film?
No no, it is a wrong approach in the first place to be apprehensive. Ramuji is a genius, he is an Einstein. He is not afraid of doing things. He continues to experiment with different genres; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. However, you can't take away that credit from him to have attempted something different each time around.
Now that the film is releasing, especially after a delay of a fortnight, what's going on in your mind?
See, before signing the film itself, I was confident about what I was doing. Then I knew what was happening when I was shooting. So now everything boils down to D-Day when audience will say what they have to say. Boss (RGV) is happy and that was my first and only priority. He trusted me and had that kind of faith in me to project this super important character. It is very close to his heart and amongst all the choices available, he chose my face to project it. He has shown this trust and faith in him so technically I am answerable only to him (smiles).
So what does one expect from the film when it arrives this Friday?
What we are going to see in Satya 2 is something that has never been seen before in an underworld film and this is what makes the story as well as the central protagonist all the more interesting. There are some real dons who have made some mistakes but Satya doesn't repeat them. He is just prepared in his head. He doesn't go out and kill people. Instead, he sits and plans things. The way he executes things and the manner in which he managed the entire structure is going to make many stand up and notice. He is a corporate mastermind kind of a gangster.
