Madhuri goes down the memory lane with mom for Gulaab Gang

For Madhuri Dixit, it was an opportunity to go down the memory lane when she united with her 81 year old mother behind the mike. That was when the doting daughter decided that when it came to her first full fledged number behind the mike, it would feature her mother alongside.

"The song in question is 'Rangi Sari Gulabi Chunariya' which is a very famous 'dadra'. Not many are aware that Dixit family has boasted of some very good classical background and Madhuri's mother was trained as well in classical music. She was the one who had inspired Madhuri to pursue art, regardless of the format, and hence when the opportunity came her way to sing in Gulaab Gang, it was an impromptu decided that the mother-daughter 'jodi' would come together for this one," informs a source close to the family.

Madhuri was expectedly excited about this since in a career spanning three decades and 70 odd films, she had just recited a few lines in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas when it came to music.

"That wasn't a song per se but 'Rangi Sari Gulabi Chunariya' is," says Madhuri who is awaiting audience reactions to her first time rendition of a full length song, "Moreover, I owe it to my mother. When she was young, she could sing but was not allowed to dance due to the orthodox background of her family. She was the one who was sure that if she had a daughter, she would allow her to do what she wished. A lot of artistic traits in me are the ones that have been passed off by her. Now with her singing a bit as well, I feel so content."

The song is not just restricted to the music album but also makes a prominent appearance in the Anubhav Sinha production. While voice of Madhuri's mother is used for another senior character in the film, Madhuri is singing for herself. In fact this was the song that she recently hummed as well when the film's music launch was held in Varanasi.

Gulaab Gang is directed Soumik Sen and produced by Anubhav Sinha.
