On his way back from London after a stage concert, Khan Sahib, as he's affectionately known, was dismayed to discover that his favourite Sarod instrument was missing in transit.
The Ustad reveals that the missing and now-recovered Sarod has been his creative traveling companion for 40 years.
And the Sarod has a name.
"She is Ganga. And she is the instrument I use constantly. Ganga is special," says Khan Sahib affectionately. "By the grace of God I have 25 Sarod instruments. I also play the instruments my sons Amaan and Ayaan use. The man who created my Sarod instruments is no more. His name was Hemendra Sen Chandra."
All of Khan Sahib's Sarod instruments are named after the rivers of India."
To bear with Ganga's disappearance was agony for Khan Sahib. "Poor Ganga suffered all this torture because of the negligence of esteemed airline British Airways. But they've found her. God bless them."
Khan Sahib was very optimistic about getting back Ganga. "Ummeed pe duniya qaayam hai. Hum Ganga ka intezar kar rahe the. Logon ne dua kee dua kamayaab rahi (the world is sustained by hope. I waited for Ganga. People's prayers worked). The beloved Sarod has just been returned to me by Mr. Rajesh Kwatre of British Airways. Thank God!"
