The reason behind this was a complaint filed by RTI activist S C Agarwal who alleged that Saif Ali Khan does not deserve the honour owing to the 2012 assault case that he was involved in. However, now we hear that Saif can retain the privileged award.

Kareena Kapoor Khan, wife of Saif Ali Khan, recently stated that the government has issued a letter saying that they are not taking the Padma Shri back from the actor. However, she also mentioned that the verdict is not out as yet.

As per the complaint filed by Agarwal on March 14, 2014, he had requested the government to take away the honour from the actor as he claimed that a privileged honour like Padma Shri should not be given to someone who has many cases registered against him. He also accused the intelligence agencies which crosscheck the details of the Padma Shri nominees of being lenient about giving clearance certificate to famous personalities and had asked them to be more vigilant in these cases.

This case filed against Saif Ali Khan had taken the scuffle case that the actor was involved in 2012 as its reference point. The 2012 case had taken place in a plush five star restaurant in Mumbai where Saif was alleged of beating a South African businessman and his father-in-law along with his group of friends Shakeel Ladakh and Bilal Amrohi. However, in March this year, Saif and his friends were pleaded not guilty of any of these charges.

After being acclaimed as an actor, Saif Ali Khan had turned his attention towards production and established Illuminati Films which has given some popular films like Love Aaj Kal and Cocktail.
