Dear Sonam,
I mostly refrain from commenting on the Box Office fate of movies but I am jubilant with the tremendous success of Neerja at the ticket window. Many good movies attain great critical response (which Neerja has done as well) but their tepid response at the box office results in them being resigned to oblivion as very people watch them. I have always wanted you to do well, not merely because of how Khoobsurat you are, but there's a unique beauty in you as a person that makes you very genuine. And Real. I thought of writing down this letter to share a few thoughts about your brilliant metamorphosis.
I have interviewed you over the years and seen the efforts that you've put in to succeed. You've always been open to feedback and valid criticism which is rather unlike most of the film stars that I know of. You've been subjected to a virulent viral campaign because of your knack for speaking up your mind especially in the last Koffee with Karan episode. You took it on your chin and had the sagacity to laugh at yourself. I've always wanted to tell you that you shouldn't repeatedly say, 'You know what I mean' during interviews. You know how much efforts I put in to ensure that you shouldn't shell out controversial quotes during my interviews as I don't want you to land up in trouble. I am glad you don't say, 'You know what I mean' during the interviews. I must also admit that interviewing you is a veritable treat because you always come up with surprises. You told me on camera during an interview that despite being a man I have started using make up during interviews and that's a sign of changing times. Yes there were a few mean comments on that video but I must say it was fun. It is always fun to await surprises whenever I speak to you.
What makes Neerja and your performance special is the fact that when you advocate fearlessness then you practice that in real life as well. You are one of the rare celebrities who have the guts to voice her opinion (even today when film stars are either expected to stay shut or utter favourable voices). You defended Aamir Khan recently when very few from the film industry came forth. You have always stated your mind on social media on burning topics without worrying about the nasty trolling that follows. It is not possible to silence you. That's a hugely respectable trait. All I can say is that more power to you! It is your fearlessness in real life that makes your braveheart act in Neerja seem so plausible and believable. When you save the lives of hapless passengers or stand up against the abuse, then one knows that you are genuinely capable of doing that. Another aspect about your acting that was really appealing is your precision. You never went overboard when it came to expressing or holding back emotions.
I am sure director Ram Madhvani played a big role in extracting a stellar performance out of you. I also feel the presence of a stalwart like Shabana Azmi must have played a big role in influencing your acting. Mr Yogendra Tiku played an inspiring father to Neerja. You are lucky that you have a father in Mr Anil Kapoor who dotes on you. Like all great actors, Mr Kapoor is narcissistic about himself but the only time when he turns totally moist eyed and vulnerable is when he talks about you during my interviews. He told me a couple of months back how the big bosses at Fox had shown him some portions from Neerja and how confident they were of the film. I think you must utilize Mr. Kapoor's rich experience in charting your future course of action by guiding you in which scripts to choose from. You've made a mark on your own but guidance in right decision making is very essential, especially now when you will be flooded with scripts (I am sure many feelers must have come your way in the last few days already).
I'd like to end this letter by saying that I hope you shall continue being fearless, give credence to valid criticism, keep supporting the underprivileged and just continue being the beautiful person that you are.
Congratulations once again.
Best Regards
Faridoon
