New movie breaks the taboo of LGBT suicides

The goal of a new documentary, Uit ‘t Leven, is to tackle the taboo surrounding LGBT suicides. According to the Social and Cultural Planning Office (SCP), almost half of Dutch lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults have had suicidal thoughts, and trans people are even more at risk.

Filmmaker Tim Dekkers wanted to break the silence around the topic and offer guidance to those in mental distress. The documentary follows the stories of three LGBT individuals, including Jean, Solange, and Kris, who have all struggled with suicidal thoughts and attempted suicide. Dekkers hopes that the documentary will spark conversations and remove the stigma surrounding suicide within the LGBT community.
