Hindus laud Gibraltar Mayor for Diwali celebration

Hindus have applauded Gibraltar Mayor Anthony Lima’s announcement of celebrating Diwali with Hindu community in his parlour at City Hall on November 15.

Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement today, said that Hindu community worldwide felt honored by Gibraltar Mayor’s active participation in Diwali and urged Mayors of all the cities around the world to be a part in the Diwali celebrations in their respective cities.

“It is a step in the right direction”, Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism headquartered in Nevada (USA), pointed out.

Most popular of Hindu festivals Diwali, the festival of lights, aims at dispelling the darkness and lighting up the lives and symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal. Diwali falls on November 13 this year.

Self-governing British overseas territory of Gibraltar, also called ‘The Rock’ and known for Palladian architecture and Barbary apes, is said to have highest percentage of Hindus of Europe. Sir Adrian Johns and Fabian Picardo are Governor and Chief Minister respectively.
