Despite being banned less than 24 hours ago in India, the much anticipated Punjabi movie Sadda Haq had an overwhelming response on its opening day. Numerous theatres across Canada where the movie premiered today were sold out within hours at the box office, and many more shows are on pace to be sold out over the opening weekend.

India is once again showing signs of being a police state. A private screening with Senior Punjab Police officials, some of which were involved in the 1984 genocide of Sikhs, lead to the film being banned by the Government despite being passed by the Censor Board of India with a “U” rating. This rating is the highest rating that can be granted by the Central Board of Film Certification, which falls under the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The “U” Rating is assigned to files that contain educational, social or family-oriented themes and is equivalent to a “G” rating in North America.

However despite the ban in India only a day before the Canadian premier, the film saw outstanding success on its opening day. The Canadian Sikh Coalition would like to thank all of the media for their support of Sadda Haq over the past few weeks. They played a key role in promoting the film which has contributed to the success on its very first day. We would also like to thank the many volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure that this movie was a success, especially the youth who created a strong awareness of the film through various social networking outlets such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. The CSC has received an overwhelming response from people in smaller cities and towns from coast to coast requesting to have the movie shown in their local theatre.

Canadian Sikh Coalition Volunteer for the promotion and distribution of Sadda Haq in Toronto, Manjinder Singh said “Many moviegoers that attended the opening day screenings of Sadda Haq were amazed by every single aspect of this film from storyline, acting of the main characters, direction, general flow, final production and of course the music. People attested to the fact that the production of Sadda Haq is on par with any previous Punjabi and Bollywood film”

This is our history and the overwhelming support has shown that there is a huge desire in people to know the truth of those dark days in Punjab. On behalf of the entire team behind Sadda Haq and the Canadian Sikh Coalition, we strongly urge each of you to support this film by creating awareness among your peers and taking time to watch it in theatres. Be a part of history and join us in making Sadda Haq not only a successful film but the start of a revolution.
