We’re not pointing fingers, but we know more than a few people (us included) who may have traded their daily green juices for sugar cookies and Champagne these past few weeks. And coupled with a fairly consistent routine of kicking back, we can safely assume that now, more than ever, we could all use a few simple, yet inspired, ways to ease us back to our normal-dressing routine (read: not PJs).

Therefore, we’re recruiting the ultimate effortless, comfortable, and versatile wardrobe essential — the legging — to help us get dressed and out the door looking as chic and polished as ever. Ahead, we break down five fabulous looks that all feature your old, stretchy best friend in a whole new way.

1

Dress Them Up, Literally — Even if you’re not quite ready to truly try the dress-over-pants look, leggings may be the perfect stepping stone to attempt the runway trend. We suggest mixing contrasting fits, such as this flared skirt paired with super-skinny leggings, for a flirty-yet-casual outfit that has legs (so to speak).

Embrace The Clash — For an unexpected, yet impressive, leggings combo, make a statement in mismatched prints. Keep your top and bottom portions in similar color families and add on just a few minimal accessories, so that you look more chic and clash-y and less “which way to the circus tent?”

3

Upgrade To (Faux) Leather — Give the comfy basic instant luxe appeal with a faux-leather finish. Even when paired with a fancy sweats-inspired jacket, like seen here for 3.1 Phillip Lim, it’s much dressier than expected.

Make Them Your Statement Piece — Just because leggings are extra-comfortable, doesn’t mean you have to hide behind them. Ditch the standard ballet-barre-ready pairs for a powerful punch of color, print, or in this case, hologram. You’ll add instant pizzazz to your look, making everyone stare at your super-simple ensemble — in a good way. Promise.

Replace Your Tights Entirely — While we swear by opaque tights, for the truly frigid days, it may be better to just skip them all together. With a robust arsenal of skin-tight, knit leggings, you’ll still be able to keep your shorts and skirts in full rotation all season while keeping your gams frostbite free.
