Large asteroid zooms past Earth on Saturday

On Saturday, a large asteroid will make a visible pass by Earth, but poses no danger of impact. The space rock, estimated to be between 40 and 90 meters in size, will come closer to our planet than the moon.

This type of event occurs only once every decade, according to NASA. Despite its size, the asteroid’s distance from Earth will be over 175,000 kilometers, making it safe to observe with binoculars or a telescope.

The Virtual Telescope Project will also offer a live stream. NASA discovered the asteroid a month ago and assures that it does not pose a threat, but it could serve as a valuable study object for potential future asteroid defense measures.
