TikTok boss under pressure from US Congress

The CEO of TikTok, Shou Chew, faced intense scrutiny from the US Congress, which appeared to have already formed negative opinions about the Chinese-made app.

Chew’s evasive responses and generalities during the five-hour hearing did not help his case, and the design of the hearing favored monologues over dialogues. Many politicians expressed concerns about TikTok’s influence on children, moderation, data security, and privacy, as well as the link between TikTok and the Chinese Communist Party.

Chew’s frequent deferral of questions raised concerns about his technical knowledge of the company. The possibility of a ban on TikTok is becoming increasingly realistic, and several legislative proposals have been made to implement such a ban. Despite extensive PR campaigns, TikTok is likely to face a legal battle in the event of a ban.
