TikTok comes with a timer for minors

TikTok has introduced a new timer feature for minors that will lock the app after one hour of use.

Users under the age of 18 will need to enter a password to continue viewing content beyond the time limit. The timer is a response to criticism that TikTok is too addictive for young people, and the company believes that the feature will help users keep their usage in check.

The app had previously introduced warnings to alert users about their screen time. If minors choose not to use the timer, they will receive a request to set a timer after 100 minutes of use.

Weekly overviews of TikTok usage will also be provided to minors. Parents or guardians with a linked profile can set a timer themselves and gain insight into their children’s usage.

The Consumers’ Association supports the timer feature, although it remains skeptical about children’s sense of responsibility in moderating their screen time.

There are also concerns about privacy and Chinese influence on the app, which has led to increasing mistrust in the West. Some countries have even banned the app on government devices.
