The Governor of Western Equatoria State (WES) yesterday urged his residents to fight against HIV and AIDS aggressively during the World AIDS Day commemoration at Yambio freedom square grounds.

Governor Bangasi Joseph Bakosoro said that, all health departments in the State should openly educate the community through radio programs on how to protect themselves.

While thanking the event organisers who made the day a success, Hon. Bakosoro urged WES to minimize the excessive use of alcohol. .

The Director of the State AIDS Commission in Yambio, Pia Jane Bangbe was grateful to all the NGOs who are working together with her office like the Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB), UNICEF, World Vision, MSF among others for helping people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA).

The chairperson of the PLWHA, Mr. Amos Missa revealed that, a total of 4,144 registered PLWHAs need adequate support, there are 11 associations of PLWHA spread across the 7 Counties of WES.

Missa recommended that each institution must have an expert to sensitize people about HIV and AIDS. He advised the trainers to discourage their clients from having unsafe sex and to talk about HIV and AIDS openly.

During the occasion, a number of people were tested to determine their status after a massive campaign by the State Ministry of Health and the HIV and AIDS commission.
