Magok said that the aim of distributing the seeds to the needy farmers is to ease the poverty level of the people in the community by encouraging them to engage in farming activities.

The minister explained that the seeds are bought from local communities and distributed to interested farmers who can’t afford. He said that there are some people among the community members already identified to receive the donated seeds.

“We do not want these seeds to be taken as food; we will monitor how you use them by sending extension workers to measure the length of every farm that has been planted and of course we know the farmers by name, their families, and their plots and so on,” he cautioned them.

“If you eat the seeds donated to you this year, we won’t recognize you as a poor farmer again,” Magok said.

Magok stressed that Lakes State citizens should combine efforts and produce their own food locally since they have enough fertile land and good soil. “Avoid killing each other in cattle rustling, but instead spend time to plant and harvest more food,” he added.

On the other hand, the Lakes State Governor Hon. Chol Tong Mayay said that the theme for 2012 will be“Agricultural growth, Education and Security”. “This year, I’m going to start by cultivating my farms – let us work to improve agriculture in the State,” he said.
