The disarmament kicked off peacefully with the help of politicians unlike in Uror County where 4 people got killed as a result of obeying a magician’s code of opposing to be disarmed, the Operation Commander Lt. Gen. Kuol Deim Kuol disclosed to the media.

4 armed people who were loyal to a local magician got killed by the SPLA forces and 4 soldiers were wounded in the process. “The four people who refused to hand over their arms to SPLA forces in the area tried to ambush the army,” Lt. Gen. Diem said.

“They started firing at the forces when they were cornered and during the fire exchange, 4 of them got killed and 4 of our soldiers were wounded,” Deim Kuol told the media at Bor airstrip.

The commander added that, “the disarmament process in the Counties is smooth because most civilians have acknowledged the use of firearms among themselves as evil.”

He confirmed that they collected a good number of firearms in Pibor County and in Boma the army recovered 300 firearms. Deim said he had no clear figures for the latest collected firearms. However, last Monday the number was over 8,000 firearms but the figure has so far increased.

The Pibor County paramount Chief, Ngantho said that his people were ready for disarmament and that those opposing will be killed by the disarmament team.

“South Sudan is now an independent nation, no need for us to kill each other, this is not good, and nobody should remain with a gun again,” the Paramount chief added.

The vice president of the Republic of South Sudan Dr. Riek Machar Teny told the Murle community at Machabol to surrender their firearms and join the government in rebuilding the nation.

In Bor County, Chief Ismail Konyi led Dr. Machar, the State Governor Kuol Manyang Juuk and the Minister of Defence John Kong Nyuon to a cattle camp near a river where cattle were stolen.

The Commissioner of Pibor County Joshua Konyi also said that his County had accepted the disarmament in all the villages including cattle camps.

He said that the SPLA forces are in all Payams of Pibor County with Dr. Machar together with top State officials to spearhead the peaceful disarmament.
