Unity State Governor Hon. Taban Deng Gai [©Gurtong/ Luk Riek]In his decree Governor Deng stated that “the Youth Union formation was unconstitutional and its formation shall wait for the supervisory committee to be formed later by the Chairperson of South Sudan National Youth Union with clear directives to form a body that will represent the interests of the entire South Sudanese youths in Unity State”

The decree stated that “the current body that was constituted under Arop Ngor Lual Thon is hereby dissolved to promote Unity among the South Sudanese youths in Unity State”

In January this year the Minister of Social Development Marim Mut in collaboration with the National Youth Union identified and released the names of Unity State Youth Union officials but some isolated members at the grassroots termed the selection process as unconstitutional.

During the process, Mut stated that his counterpart at the national level had recognized the formation of the Union but the State Deputy Governor William Daud Riek urged him to let the matter remain pending until the selection committee arrives from Juba before the process begins.

Daud warned that, “the conventions we are dreaming on have not yet been put in place in the rest of the States in Republic of South Sudan and there is nothing particular in Unity State alone.”
