Most spend their days under harsh conditions grinding gravel by the roadside for sale.

The sales are normally minimal although good returns sometimes come their way.

The harsh conditions have led a number of women in Torit to venture into fishing business in order to feed their families.

When Gurtong visited one site, a woman was all smiles when staff from the Victoria Construction Company bought all her gravel.

Most women have ventured into grinding gravel with the hope that they will be bought by the builders and contractors in the area.

Selling a truck full of gravel in day is a major boost for such humble women in the rural area.

Most of the building companies in the state promote this business by buying gravel for mixing concrete.

A tin of gravels costs 25 South Sudanese Pounds while a wheelbarrow goes for 50 South Sudanese Pounds.

For the women, they do not incur losses since they use the locally available stones.
