Dr. Barnaba Marial National government spokesperson speaking to the press today in Juba said that more police have been taken from Rumbek, Lakes State to Wau in a bid to calm the situation.

“The Government has contained the situation by bringing in more police forces from Rumbek. At present, investigation is going on and a team led by the Deputy Minister of Interior accompanied by the Police Inspector General and Generals from the army and National Security are in Wau,” Marial said.

A parliamentary committee from the National Assembly is also on ground in Wau investigating the killings.

Tension has mounted in Wau since Monday following discovery of six dead bodies by authorities after an escalating riot took place in the previous week.

Marial said yesterday there was an attack launched in Jou where six shops were reportedly destroyed. There were also unconfirmed reports that several houses were set ablaze and some new killings had occurred.

The tension in Wau engulfed after civilians launched demonstration against State government decision to relocate the Headquarters of Wau County to a new destination, Bagari about 12kilometeres away from Wau.

Ten people were reportedly killed during the beginning of the demonstration. 
Meanwhile, Marial said at least 20 people are missing after being kidnapped.

“At the present the situation is under control. We regret the incident,” he added.

The Wau incident is one of the worst at the moment occurring at the end of the year, marking magnitude of the insecurity situation in the country.
