The minister said that Kala Azar is a major public health problem in Jonglei State and the neighbouring Bahr el Ghazal regions.
The minister urges the public to maintain the available facilities to encourage the donors to provide more facilities.
“The good thing is Kala Azar is now still local and there is now very effective new drugs being introduced which is very powerful,” he said.
The minister has said they are committed to seek funds from their partners to help in constructing the Kala Azar Hospital in Jonglei State.
“I discussed with the state governor a while ago at the possibility of constructing a special hospital for Kala Azar just like what we have in Western Equatoria for sleeping sickness and Tuberculosis (TB) hospital in Bahr el Ghazal state,” said Milly.
Minister informed the public that Kala Azar disease is a parasitic and can be eradicated as it is currently limited to Ayod and Fangak.
In October 2012 more 10 people killed as a result of Kala Azar outbreak in Ayod County.
Kala Azar is an infectious disease carried by a parasite and transmitted by the bite of a sand fly.
It causes a fever that does not subside and if left untreated, Kala Azar patients simply waste away or die after catching other infectious diseases.
