Dr Yohannes Edward Odhok, who also serves at the Malakal Teaching Hospital said some diseases contracted are bacterial and others are either protozoan or viral diseases.

Dr Edward said that syphilis, gonorrhoea and HIV are commonly contracted when an infected person gets into unprotected sexual contact with uninfected.

He said majority of people with STDs are youths.

“Youth who belong to families that do not have control over their children always remained at the high risks. The soldiers at the barrack, drunkards and students at boarding always can be victims. They do things recklessly because nobody puts them at alert,” Edward stressed.

He warned that sexually transmitted diseases are very harmful and can cause death if not treated.

“Our youths are not aware of these diseases or might ignore the dangers which are caused by these illnesses. They need to know so that they are protected,” he said.

“Some people are afraid of approaching doctors for treatment. Our society is very backward; they don’t know that doctors are just there to help them. We have nothing to do with your secrets. Some young girls can sometimes refuse to pronounce to people that they are pregnant. This is because of ignorance and lack of awareness,” he said.
