The Organization of African Union (OAU) will celebrate its golden jubilee in 2013. OAU – the forerunner to the African Union (AU) – is on a mission to eradicate colonialism in the African continent.

Referring to the theme of this year’s celebrations, former AU Commissioner for Social Affairs, Advocate Bience Gawanas, said Pan-Africanism in Namibia should not only be an intellectual discourse, but a way of life. He said the theme – Pan-Africanism – will motivate Africans to stay connected to their roots while building a positive image of the continent.

Gawanas further recommended the educational institutes to incorporate in curriculums the current issues faced by Africa and the contributions of the continent which will install pride and unity amongst the youth in Africa.

“We can no longer blame the past for our current situation. With the transformation of the OAU, we as Africans have shown that we are taking charge of our destiny,” she maintained.

Talking about the future of Africa and the impact of keeping positive hope, President Hifikepunye Pohamba agreed that the youth must remain optimistic and dreamful.

“We must inspire them to become the champions of African unity.  We must equip them with the relevant skills in order to be able to take up the mantle of leadership and take our continent to greater heights. The youth of Africa are the hope of Africa.  The youth of Africa are the reservoirs of knowledge and catalyst for Africa’s development.  Our youth are our wealth,” he said.
