The State Ministry of Social Development in collaboration with Veterinary Sans Frontiers [VSF] Swiss through the United Nations Children’s Fund [UNICEF] has from last week distributed 430 goats to 86 street families in efforts to rehabilitate them.
The Deputy Director of Child Welfare Directorate in the Ministry Francis Ngong Makak told Gurtong that his Ministry conducted a street children survey in June last year as a first step to address the influx of street children in the town.
“Our survey found out that Northern Bahr el Ghazal State has over 300 street children in Aweil town only besides the other five counties of the state. We found out that most street children are orphans who have been forced to live in the streets to fend for a living. Others came to the town in search of food and employment”, he said.
‘’Each household has been five she-goats for milk production as well as sorghum”, he said.
He added that the survey undertook family tracking of the street children in a bid to ascertain their status.
He added that the survey results showed a need for involvement of development actors in addressing the street children menace.
The street children commended the initiative and called for more support, including the education of school-going children.
