Chief of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Julius Malema criticizes the government for failing to enhance the healthcare sector. Malema says had the government been proud of its health sector, Nelson Mandela would have been receiving medical treatment at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto.

“Just imagine if Mandela had been at Baragwanath hospital. It would have been very good because it would have been a passing of confidence in our public services,” Malema said.

Malema promised the people that EFF would efficiently use state funding to channelize critical government institutions. He claimed that his party would contribute to the development of healthcare sector so that prominent figures would feel comfortable coming to government facilities for help. Mandela is currently receiving medical care at a Pretoria hospital.

“Right now, Mandela cannot be treated at Baragwanath because of its lack of facilities. We should have designated a lot of funds for its development… We should have used Baragwanath in the past 20 years. It could have been one of the best hospitals,” Malema added.

The African National Congress (ANC) has refused to respond to Malema’s candid statements. According to DA Gauteng health spokesperson Jack Bloom, Mandela had to receive medical care at a private facility because his usual military hospital was currently mismanaged and short on resources.

“It is sadly true that former president Mandela would receive poor treatment at Chris Hani – that point by Malema is valid. However, I think Malema is a very poor role model. He doesn’t pay his taxes and he’s up on corruption charges,” said Bloom.
