Infuriated residents of Tlokwe in North West scared the ANC delegation and pushed them to leave the area in a chaotic situation. The delegation led by ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa faced harsh criticism from the residents who accused them of approaching them for personal gain.

ANC North West provincial chairman Supra Mahumapelo was also forced to cut short his visit. A group of residents gathered against Ramaphosa and began chanting slogans when he was to deliver a speech. On the other hand, ANC candidate Oupa Mogoshane says a group of drunkards who were seeking media attention tried to create havoc during Ramaphosa’s address.

Nonetheless, Ramaphosa managed to say a few words but then judged the audience’s aggressive reaction and returned to his car. The crowd also raised their voice against the supposed presence of officials from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) in the ANC delegation.

“We know those officials. They went door to door last week, saying they will be providing us with food hampers. Now, the very same guys are here again, this time wearing ANC regalia,” one of the protesters shouted.

Meanwhile, Minister of Social Development Bathabile Dlamini has been accused of exploiting the electorates by promising them free food. DA provincial leader Chris Hattingh alleged that Dlamini was planning to spend between R3 million and R5 million on free food parcels for potential voters.

Denying the accusations, Dlamini’s spokeswoman, Lumka Oliphant said, “It is unfortunate that the DA chooses to accuse Minister Bathabile Dlamini of this. She had been to Tlokwe last month and had promised a follow-up visit as she had agreed on deadlines with Social Development officials.”
