The arrest was made after the chiefs reportedly exchanged abusive words with the State Military Caretaker Governor in a meeting last Saturday.

During the meeting held at Akon Buoi Town Hall, Governor Matur Chut Dhuol asked chiefs of Rumbek Central County to speak to their respective people to avoid cycle of revenge but the chiefs questioned his legacy instead.

The Regional Court President of Malek Payam, Mabor Alier Chepuou-nyuoc asked Governor Dhuol of the alleged insensitive word he stated during his visit to Malek Payam last month. The governor allegedly said that he has not seen a beautiful woman in Malek.

The statement was speculated on local radio FM stations in Rumbek which provoked the chiefs and Malek communities. They branded the governor’s statement as “irresponsible and abusive” to the entire Malek community.

After two days, security agents arrested the three chiefs without warrant of arrest. A family member who requested anonymity said their chiefs have been arrested since Tuesday by the governor’s daily verbal orders.

“The chiefs arrested are Mabor Alier Chepuou-nyuoc, Regional court from Malek Payam, Guong Akoldit Ruoc, Executive Chief of Mayom Payam and Makur Chawul Kang, the sub-chief from Matangai Payam,” he said.

Chief Alier was allegedly arrested because he questioned the governor’s abusive word.  He asked the governor whether he went there to see problems that face Malek payam communities or was looking for a beautiful woman.

A Lakes State Senior Police Officer who preferred anonymity confirmed the arrest of the chiefs, saying they were arrested through orders.  Daily arrests are persistent but many cases are bypassing police – all arbitrary arrested cases are taken to Langcok military prison.

Lakes State Legislative Assembly Member David Kockedhia, representing Rumbek Central County in State Parliament confirmed reports of torture and mistreatment of the chiefs.

“The Chiefs are beaten, mistreated, abused and their clothes were removed – they are now staying naked inside prison,” said Kockedhia.

Langcok military prison is located at the northern part of Rumbek Central County. It was setup in February by Lakes State government.
