According to eyewitnesses, the man identified as Charles Malong Awan was alleged to have been under the influence of alcohol when he attempted to fight Mareng Chuor Deng.

The state minister of Parliamentary Affairs in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state who was also present during the event condemned the act and said the culprit was either instructed to interrupt the function or might have gone out of mental sense to recognise the importance of the day and the person attacked.

“I was present during this event and we those who were there and had seen this, were all astonished and shocked with this act, because a person with good sense cannot do this to the person he does not know or whom they neither share the constituency or geographical location or political competitions, so what came into my mind was that, this person might have been sent by those who wanted to interrupt the citizens’ expression in response to the alleged matter of the governor,” Ernest Mangok Mangok, said in Aweil.

According to other several sources on ground, Malong was arrested when attempting to fight the organizing committee members for the idea of working against the people’s interests to defend the removal of the incumbent governor.

According to other sources three colleagues were later arrested tortured and taken to unknown place without any proof whether they participated in the decision of attacking the minister.

However, Gurtong tried to contact the assaulted and provoked minister for his reaction and personal response but could not reach him.
