According South Sudan Minister of Information and Broadcasting Michael Makuei Lueth, the Ex-VP Riek Machar Teny escaped into his hometown of Adok of Unity state after clashes erupted between his forces and presidential guard in Juba on December 15.

Sources said that Riek escaped using a boat reaching Adok at weekend as fighting intensified in Jonglei and Unity states.

Makuei told South Sudan Television that “Machar managed to escape. He used his boat along the Nile and ended up in his village of Adok and went into Bentiu.”

Meanwhile, South Sudan Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin stated that government of South Sudan is committed to talk to VP Riek with his loyalists without preconditions.

On Saturday, the SPLA commander for Division four Maj-Gen James Koang Chuol declared that he defected to join Riek Machar forces.

Minister Marial confirmed that “it was under the command of Machar that Maj-Gen Peter Gadet Yak controls Bor town and at the same time under his command that Maj-Gen James Koang Chuol controls Bentiu, the oil rich state.”

Since the failed coup attempt on December 15, South Sudan government is receiving senior diplomats trying to broker peace.

The leadership of South Sudan under command of incumbent President Salva Kiir Mayardit accepted to dialogue without preconditions.
