Peter Mathiang Mayom, a Maper County Official said that the pastoralists (youth) defended their cows and at least 10 people have been killed in all as five died on the spot.

He said the youth were on alert to respond and protect their cows as the raiders attempted to raid their cattle camp. “The raiders are suspected to have come from Unity state. They attacked Akanyang camp and raided more than 500 cows but all (cows) were recovered,” said Mathiang.

“The attackers lost five people on spot. Ten bodies were counted on the ground and all cows were returned.” According to Mathiang, the cattle raiders were clad in mixed army uniforms.

Lakes and Unity states have a series of raiding and counter raiding history. Attempts by both state governments recently have however left a minimum impact as the attacks have continued to date.
