The commissioner is accused of having passed a rule that restricts local residents from farming within private plots in the residential areas of the county headquarters.

The youth angrily reacted to the detentions and high cost fines imposed on individuals as they peacefully demonstrated against the act on Monday.

According to the paramount chief of Aweil South County, Ayom Akol Wek, the commissioner did not consult the chiefs to suspend further farming and cattle rearing in the area.

Akol confirmed that the suspension of farming in the area has resulted to illegal imprisonment of residents just for being found rearing livestock and farming in Malek-alel area.

“Our people have been undergoing several detentions from the commissioner through his formed committee, who have no mercy on other people especially weak and lactating mothers, (who) have been severely tortured and kept in custody for days,” Akol retorted.

“This committee has gone beyond their limits by accusing others without proof, beating and detaining them. Others have been strongly fined with an amount of SSP300 which is very difficult for any ordinary resident to find especially during the rainy season like this.”

For the last two weeks, around 37 residents have been reportedly detained of which 20 were released but 17 others are still in detention and are likely to stay there longer.

Mr. Jiel however has refuted all allegations, saying he has consulted over the matter.

“I never took the laws into my own hands as those allegations claimed. This was unanimously agreed by County Executive Council (CEC) two years ago; that those rules be respected but surprisingly, they denied all these” Jiel said.
