Hon. Wel Deng, who represents Aweil North County constituency number two, urged his fellow community leaders, chiefs and intellectuals to keep away from alleged connections with recent defection of Gen. Dau Aturjong Nyuol to the Dr. Riek Machar- led rebellion.

“I want to tell my community and the entire community of NBGS about the recent defection, that our people must always remain united and focused,” he said. “We should not let ourselves be shaken or shocked by the recent mutiny of comrade Aturjong. We should not panic but rather remain vigilant and supportive to the government.”

Gen. Dau who also hails from NBGS, declared his defection to the SPLM/A in opposition two weeks ago.

However, the legislator urged his community members not to be misled by such acts of aggression. He urges chiefs to persistently carry out their communal role of leadership and guidance during this delicate time of crises.

Gen. Dau contested as an independent candidate for the governorship in the 2010 general elections but lost to the then state governor, Paul Malong Awan, the SPLM candidate. He went back to serve in the army but his alleged connection with the SPLM/A in Opposition has been rumoured and was confirmed when he recently defected to the Machar camp.

Other sources also say Gen. Gau’s rebellion is connected to the appointment of Malong as the Army Chief of General Staff in the national army.

He has accused the leadership of being visionless, dictatorial, unjust and corrupt.
