Security measures have been tightened against “criminals” in the South Sudan Western Bahr el Ghazal State capital, Wau, ahead of Christmas holydays, state police Commissioner, Maj. Gen. Abraham Manyuat, told reporters at the police headquarter on Friday morning.

“The operations against criminals will involve community policing in helping the personnel with information on criminals’ activities and will continue until January next year,” said Manyuat.

Manyuat said the police have deployed security personnel within Wau town to quell any insecurity cases arousing within the community, caused by the so-called “Niga groups”.

“We have also made contingency plans to crackdown on those criminals responsible for breaking into shops and looting people at night, as the time is now approaching Christmas,” he said.

Today, the commissioner is meeting with local chiefs within Wau town to discuss ways forward in dealing withcriminal activities through involving policing community, he said.

Involving the local people in dealing with criminal cases would help the police to identify who and where these criminals are performing their activities. These will help the police on where the deployment of the security personnel would be more effective at the rural areas, said Manyuat.

“For our community to build the trust with our police on identifying criminal’s areas where they hide theirstolen goods would make our work easy to truck them down at any time,” he said.

The commander added that the police are always ready to response to the communities when their help is needed.
The security measures come after the state have in the past witnessed several criminal cases, including the recent killing of two young girls, who were raped and died, and rampant robbery at Wau markets.
