Reports indicate that the man was attacked and beaten to death by the girl’s relatives after she turned down a marriage proposal from a second man who had paid a dowry of 15 heads of cattle to her family.

Ironically, the deceased’s brother was also among three people who were injured in another incident in TonjMarket.

In the second incident, the deceased’s brother identified as Benjamin Jaal Jaal was injured in a scuffle with aprison officer who had attempted to arrest him over a previous case of eloping with a girl.

Tonj South County Commissioner William Wol Mayom who confirmed the two incidents told Gurtong that the prison officer and a school pupil were injured during the scuffle.

“The fracas at Tonj Market erupted when an inmate who had escaped prison resisted arrest by a prison officer who had been remanded for allegedly setting the inmate free. Jal grabbed the officer’s gun and shot him on the knees and right arm before he was overpowered by the officer and shot on the hand. A pupil who was caught in the crossfire was shot in the thigh and knee by stray bullets”, he explained.

He affirmed that the situation had returned to normal and that the market in the town had re-opened two hours after the dispute was quelled by the police.

The Commissioner added that the victims are being treated at Tonj Hospital while another has been transferred to Wau Teaching Hospital.

The Friday incident came just three weeks after the Greater Tonj Community conducted a convention at Kalkuel town in a move to discourage communities from fighting over girls’ elopement and pregnancies as well as revenge killings.
