Reports indicate that the CID officer allegedly set himself ablaze inside the armory at the facility situated a few kilometres from the state government headquarters in Kuacjok.

A huge explosion caused by burning ammunition rocked the premises, sending panic amongst Kuacjok residents.

It is said that the detective was mentally ill although the reasons for his action could not be established immediately.

The Warrap State Minister for Information Paul Dhel Gum confirmed the incident and said investigations have been launched into the incident.

He revealed that all the items lost in the inferno will be made public after the investigations.

In another incident, a standoff ensued at the Kuacjok prison service department on Thursday when prison authorities attempted to arrest an officer at the prison over embezzlement of funds.

Information Minister Gum said an exchange of fire ensued when prison authorities attempted to re-arrest Akol Akot who had earlier been granted parole to visit his family.

It is reported that Akot had been accused by the department of misappropriating public funds amounting to about SSP 50, 000 and had been detained by the prison department’s authorities.

“When security officers went for him at his house, he refused to come out and started firing at the officers and injuring two of them.  We advised the security team not to exchange fire with him as it posed a grave danger to his family”, he said.

The prison officer, who sustained abdominal injuries from gun shots, however, surrendered on Friday morning.

Gum said Akol and the two wounded soldiers were taken to Kuacjok hospital for treatment.

He will be arraigned in court to answer to the charges.
