Juba Feb. 11th, 2015.  Today angry demonstrators identified to be local business men demonstrated at Central Equatoria state Governor’s office at around 11:15 hrs, over land distribution misunderstanding.  Per the information from some eye witness is that some of demonstrators gathered at the State Governor’s office outside for the demonstration are armed.

Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO said the information about some protectors are armed was not dependently verified by CEPO. This information on some of the protectors are armed have provoked the deployed forces from South Sudan National Police Services and South Sudan army (SPLA) to resorted to firing Ariel shots to disperse the angry demonstrators.

This resulted to exchange of gunfire between both sides.   

Performing journalism roles and tasks for the benefit of public, Journalist Mading Ngor was covering the event by taking pictures. Some of security agents appeared before him and immediately arrested him and took him with them. Where did security took him is unknown

CEPO condemned the incident and considered it as a strong evidence of increase in crackdown of the media and journalists. Stressed Mr. Yakani

The trend of arresting and detaining journalists continuously in early 2015 is clear evidence that space of media and suppression of the freedom of express and media which is stipulated in South Sudan Transitional Constitution, 2011 article 24 is no longer obey, fulfill and respected by our security agents as their obligation to the global principles of human rights.

In strong terms CEPO is urging the security force to release Journalists Mading Ngor immediately
