JUBA, 17 February 2015 [Gurtong] – The Commissioner for Baliet County, Hon. James Tor Monybuny accused the anti-government fighters of committing atrocities at the county situated west of Malakal town.
"This attack is true, the rebels coming from the direction of Nyirol County North of Jonglei State launched an attack on the civil population targeting the Arab nomads who have come to the place in search of grazing land and water during this dry season," Monybuny stated.
"They attacked an area called Korou at Adong Payam. Two people were killed of which one was a woman. They have also wounded 9 people. These people are now taken to Malakal Teaching Hospital for treatment. To make thing worse three innocent children were abducted among them are two boys and one girl. This is very unfortunate and we condemn it," the commissioner explained.
"Our security forces have tried to search for bodies of the children but none was found; meaning they have been abducted. We ask the humanitarian organizations to help if they can find the whereabouts of the missing children. They rebels should know that these people are not South Sudanese and are not part of the conflict," he said.
President Salva Kiir and SPLM-IO leader Riek Machar early February signed a deal, committing to end the conflict that has devastated the country. The ceasefire agreement was signed at talks in Ethiopia.
The conflict – which erupted in December 2013 – has displaced about 1.5 million people and earlier ceasefire deals have not lasted.
