A cross section of Ugandans including members of parliament want prostitution to be legalized.

This has come after MPs debating and scrutinizing the Sexual Offences amendment Bill at Golf Course Hotel ,in Kampala. Most of those supporting the legalization of prostitution are men and the sex workers themselves.

In the debate on the issue, there are MPs who support the legitimization on grounds that it will reduce on rape and defilement while those opposing it say it is against most Ugandans' culture.

Some MPs contend that if prosecution is legalized it will also stop sexual exploitation and sexual violence against children.

On of the MPs supporting the legalization is Martin Muzale from eastern part of the country.

Muzale said,'' i support the legalization of prostitution because there are men who might be in need of sex but they have no women to play it with. When they do not get the women to satisfy them sexually, they end up raping women or defiling underage girls. The solution to such situations is let sex workers to be legally allowed to operate so that those who need them can go where they are for their services.''

An engineer in the country's capital Kampala,Bob Ntwatwa said that he supports legalization of prostitution because paying sex workers for sex is cheaper than being with a girl friend.

'' Befriending women in Uganda is expensive. They demand a lot of money before offering sex.I would rather buy one on the streets than befriending one.'' '' said Ntwatwa.

Kafuluma,35 said he usually gets services of sex workers and supports legalization of their services.

Kafuluma said,''I am in support of making prostitution legal .Those sex workers save us when we are in need of sex. They are affordable. At only 4000 shillings,(equivalent of 1 US dollar) one can buy a prostitute for sex.''

Oliver Kwagala ,a female legislator, while speaking on behalf of those against legalizing prostitution said,''That is against our cultural practices and norms.Prostitution should be totally prohibited .it should be regarded as a taboo.''

Farida Nabule,40, a secondary school teacher had no kind words for sex workers.''It would be madness to legalize prostitution in Uganda which is a God-fearing-country.

Currently although there are over 40,000 sex workers operating from different towns in the country, the act is illegal and if found guilty the sex workers can be imprisoned up to 5 yrs.

Some time back , the government introduced the ‘Sexual Offences (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill’. The Bill sought to amend the provisions of various enactments on sexual offenses, and procedural requirements during trial of sexual offenses and other related matters.
