South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardit today issued a republican decree appointing the former SPLM-IO Chief Negotiator, Taban Deng Gai as the First Vice President.

JUBA, 25 July 2016 [Gurtong]-(FVP) replacing Dr. Riek Machar Teny, the leader of the SPLM/A- in Opposition.

In the decree read on the state owned television, South Sudan Broadcasting Cooperation (SSBC), Dr. Riek Machar Teny was replaced following his failure to return to the country after President Kiir issued an appeal for him to return within 48 hrs.
Last Friday the SPLM-IO members held a meeting in Juba nominating Taban Deng as the acting FVP in the absence of Dr. Riek Machar in order for the peace implementation process to continue.

Machar left Juba following the outbreak of the fighting that started at the state house (J1) on Friday 08th – Monday 11th July 2016.

Machar who returned to Juba with his forces on April 29th 2016 was sworn in as the FVP and the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) was formed agreeing to a peace deal signed in August 2015 seeking to end more than two years of devastating civil war.

The decrees issued by Kiir as follows,  decree No.288 for the relieve of three National Ministers of TGoNU; Taban Deng Gai for Mining, Stephen Dhieu Dau for Trade and Industry and David Deng Athorbei for Finance and Planning.

Decree No. 289 for the appointment of Taban Deng Gai as the FVP of the TGoNU.

Decree No. 290 for the appointment of the National Ministers of TGoNU; Stephen Dhieu Dau for Finance and Planning.

 While the position for Minister of Trade and Mining remains vacant.
