Kolkata: A consensus to rename West Bengal as Paschim Banga has been sent for an all party meeting for their permission. After the meeting in the State Assembly, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Partha Chatterjee told to the ministers that, West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Bannerjee proposed this new name and unanimously everybody agreed to this name. He also added that, everybody is satisfied with this name, nobody has any objection. “Now the new name will be Paschim Banga in all languages. We want to change the name of the state to get the administrative advantages.”

The chief minister presided over the meeting attended by Trinamool Congress, besides ally Congress and Socialist Unity Centre of India, Left Front constituents Communist Party of India – Marxist, Communist Party of India, Revolutionary Socialist Party, Forward Bloc and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, among other parties.

Mamata Bannerjee has already instructed Partha Chatterjee and the leader of the opposition party, Surjyokanto Mishra about her proposed new name. Chatterjee also said that, “Paschim Banga as a new name also mirrors history”, adding that a resolution would be moved in the assembly for the adoption of the name, which would be then referred to the Center. Forward Bloc said that, the new name was finalized among the three names, Paschim Banga, Bhangabhoomi and Bangla.

CPI’s leader Surjyokanto Mishra and Chatterjee in the press meet said that, "Whatever be the opinions in the past, unanimity was reached on the issue at the all-party meeting." Once the bill will be passed from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and ratified by the President, the state would get the new name. Chatterjee also said that, in the meeting they also discussed about the bifurcation of Burdwan, Jalpaiguri, North 24 Parganas and West Midnapore. It was decided that, the district magistrates would be asked to seek the opinion of the people before all the proceedings. In the past also, the initiatives were taken of changing the name of the state in the year 1974 when Congress was in power and in the year 1999, when CP(I)M was in power. But both the times the plan got postponed because of many reasons.
