The drift within the Congress and the Government in the last couple of months has put forward its dependence on the party President, Sonia Gandhi. It was obvious from the statement of the senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes, as he has said, “Can you replace a leadership?
Leadership is leadership." A week after returning from US, Sonia attended the Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting and finalized tickets for some seats for the next year’s Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
After taking over the charge, Sonia has chosen the politically significant Uttar Pradesh elections to be her first task. The meeting attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh decided tickets for about 61 seats. “The fierce show of loyalty is expected to come from a Congressman nevertheless it exposes the excessive dependence on one person”, commented Sonia Gandhi.
Sonia held the meeting just a day after the debate of Narendra Modi versus Rahul Gandhi as prime ministerial candidates in 2014 was thrown up. As BJP seems to be gaining the upper hand, the sense of drift and loss of direction within the party came into the light. In Sonia’s absence, the Congress almost handed over the cash-for-votes scam issue to the BJP in Parliament.
Many MPs are indeed pointing fingers at senior ministers for their failure to deal with the Anna movement and it in turn is taking the shape of factionalism within the Congress. Even the four-member committee set up by her, under Rahul Gandhi, has failed to stand in for Sonia. However, Sonia is back to work now and is all set to expose once again how increasingly the party is dependent on her.
