Hurricane Maria is reportedly drawing near on Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula, where people are making sure that they have all the goods they might need in case of disaster. According to Stephen Hatt of the Canadian Hurricane Centre, the storm system was sited around 200 kilometres south of Sable Island, heading northeastward at a rate of 75 km/h.

Hatt said: “It’s forecast to track over the isthmus of the Avalon Peninsula early to mid-afternoon.” He also said that Maria possibly will bring winds of 100 km/h to southeastern Newfoundland, with the southern part of the Avalon Peninsula hit with much stronger gusts of wind.

Hatt added, “Where winds are coming onshore we have a hurricane warning in effect where we’re expecting winds gusting to 120 kilometres per hour.”

Moreover, the Hurricane Centre forecasts intense rain on Friday, to the extent of 60 to 90 millimetres of rain.

Journalist Todd Battis says people in St. John’s still remember Hurricane Igor and city officials are announcing again and again to take safety measures for the storm headed their way.

Battis said: “You know Hurricane Igor, which was last year, right around this time, they’ve learned a lot from that. So what they are doing is they are implementing measures that were borne out of that.”
