UP chief minister, Mayavati has now shot off one more note to Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh demanding inclusion of Jats in the list of other backward classes (OBC) as maintained by central government. This is the third letter of Mayavati to prime minister in last three days. The Jats are already in the OBC list of UP.
“Jats mainly earn their livelihood from agriculture and related activities but with time and increase of population, the per person land holding has dropped. As a result of which, they are now financially and educationally backward”, expressed CM in the letter. She has also written that the Jats of UP should be also be included in the government of India’s list of OBC so that they can take benefit of OBC quota in central government jobs and educational institutions.
However on Saturday, Mayavati had written a letter insisting PM to provide quota to Muslims by bringing them under the reservation policy, followed by another write up requesting him to grant reservation to upper castes living below the poverty line. She had clearly stated in both the letters that her party will support the central government if quota for Muslims requires constitutional amendment.
As for now, the three demands made by Mayavati are being seen as her attempt to all castes and communities for gaining a competitive edge in 2012 assembly elections.
